Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts in the world, with homes, temples, shops, and restaurants within its golden sandstone walls. Built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, the fort rises beautifully above the Golden City. Its narrow lanes are filled with heritage architecture, local crafts, and stories of Rajasthan’s royal past. The fort is especially magical during sunrise and sunset when its sandstone walls glow golden.
Patwa Haveli is a magnificent collection of five grand havelis built by the wealthy Patwa family. Known for its detailed stone carvings, ornate balconies, and beautiful interiors, it showcases the craftsmanship of Jaisalmer’s artisans. The haveli reflects the lifestyle and prosperity of merchants who once lived in the city. Its intricate architecture makes it one of the most photographed heritage sites in Jaisalmer.
Gadisar Lake is a historic man-made lake that once served as an important source of water for the people of Jaisalmer. Surrounded by temples, shrines, and beautifully carved chhatris, the lake offers a peaceful escape from the city. A boat ride on the lake is a popular way to enjoy its surroundings. Early mornings and evenings are particularly beautiful, with the golden light reflecting across the water.
Kuldhara is an abandoned historic village located around 35 km from Jaisalmer. Once home to the prosperous Paliwal Brahmins, the village was mysteriously deserted in the early 19th century. Today, its ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into traditional desert settlements and their architecture. The quiet lanes, stone houses, and legends surrounding Kuldhara make it one of Jaisalmer’s most intriguing attractions.
Bada Bagh is a historic complex of royal cenotaphs, or chhatris, built in memory of the rulers and members of the royal family of Jaisalmer. Set against the vast desert landscape, the beautifully carved sandstone structures create a striking scene. The site is known for its peaceful atmosphere and panoramic desert views. Sunset at Bada Bagh is especially captivating as the warm light highlights the golden sandstone.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli is a distinctive 18th-century mansion known for its unique architecture and striking peacock-shaped roofline. Built for Salim Singh, a powerful prime minister of the Jaisalmer kingdom, the haveli features beautifully carved balconies and detailed sandstone work. Its upper floors were designed to create a dramatic and elegant appearance. It remains one of the most recognizable heritage landmarks in the heart of Jaisalmer.
